Chessboard

I'm sure everyone has had a time when he or she happens to have the pieces from a small chess set, but no board. I know I hate it when that happens to me, especially when I really want to play a game of chess with someone. The last time this happened to me, I glanced over at my four 5x5x5 cubes and realized that I did not have to suffer any more. A few hours later, I had created a chess board, and even had a wavy pattern around the edge of it for extra effect. The pattern, by the way, is identical on the reverse side of the board.

So, how many moves to mate?
